The James C. Gaither Junior Fellows program offers approximately 15 one-year fellowships to college graduates. Junior Fellows work as research assistants to senior scholars at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C. The University of Chicago can nominate 2 candidates for the national competition. To be considered for nomination, all of the following materials must be received by November 27, 2025 at 11:59 PM CT:
- A personal statement (cover letter) of two pages, double-spaced, on why you would like to be a Junior Fellow and how you're prepared for the position.
- A writing sample, three to five pages in length, double-spaced, demonstrating your capacities in research, writing, and analytical thought. Include a brief paragraph contextualizing the writing sample, not to be counted toward the five-page limit.
- Academic CV (2 pages)
- Two letters of recommendation (written by faculty or professionals who can best speak to your ability to succeed as a Junior Fellow)
- Unofficial transcript
